Welcome to Slow Food Cluj Transilvania

The Ratiu Center for Democracy is a non profit organisation which seeks to further the ideals of the late Ion Ratiu, a life-long advocate for democracy. The Center’s mission is to encourage non-partisan promotion of the values and behaviors associated with democracy. This mission is acomplished through a wide range of activities at the local, national and international level. Fundamental to our mission is the application of democracy in every aspect of life. To this end the Center of Democracy is home to Transilvania Fest Association and Slow Food Cluj Transilvania convivium, and supports their cultural, rural preservation and promotion efforts.

One of the first programs launched by the Ratiu Center for Democracy was Turda Fest, which has since grown into its own association. This annual harvest time festival provides an opportunity for: community-wide participation in experiencing the unique traditions of the area, bolstering local pride, observing the region’s harmonious multicultural blend and promoting Turda as an important tourist destination. Turda Fest meanwhile became Transilvania Fest and awakened an interest in the region’s gastronomic heritage that inspired the creation of Slow Food Cluj Transilvania convivium.

Slow Food Cluj Transilvania, created in April 2009, organizes the year-round calendar of food and agricultural activities culminating with Transilvania Fest, travelling food and culture festival.

Our convivium is working to bring people together to preserve and enjoy the pleasures of food and life while supporting and promoting producers within the Greater Turda and Aries Valley. Local producers are part of the cultural identity of our region and country. Our chapter is just one of roughly 1000 working with other convivia from around the world to support the Slow Food mission at a local level. Please join us as we work to celebrate and sustain the agricultural and culinary traditions of people from our region and around the world.
